Mauricio Cárdenas has been the Minister of Finance and Public Credit of the Republic of Colombia since September 2012.

Minister Cárdenas has held numerous important positions in the public and private sectors in Colombia, as well as in international organizations and academia.

He has been Minister of Mines and Energy, Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Transport and Director of the National Planning Department.

Moreover, he was the Director of the Latin American Initiative at the Brookings Institution between 2008 and 2011. Previously, he served as President of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA) and as the Executive Director of Fedesarrollo, a Colombian think-tank.
Furthermore, he has been General Manager of Bogotá’s Energy Company (Empresa de Energía de Bogotá) and president of Titularizadora Colombiana.

In 1999, CNN and Time Magazine selected him as a Latin American leader for the new millennium.

Minister Cárdenas has published numerous books and academic articles on subjects related to the Colombian economy. His research has focused on macroeconomic management, economic growth, financial markets, labor issues, inequality, poverty and the impact of institutions on the economy. Since 1992, he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at Universidad de los Andes and has been a visiting professor and researcher at several universities, including Harvard University. He has also been a columnist for the newspaper El Tiempo

Minister Cárdenas is an economist. He holds a Masters degree in economics from Universidad del los Andes and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley.
